ESSENTIAL OILS 101
Simply put, they are the concentrated oils of any given plant, usually obtained by a distillation, or steaming, process. These oils can then be used as a single oil or in multi oil blends. Both oils and blends can then be used in several ways including aromatic, topical, and internal.
In addition to smelling good, many benefits (physiological, mental and emotional) may be derived from oils being absorbed through our scent receptors. After being absorbed, they have a direct link into our limbic system which supports our emotion, behavior, motivation and memory – to name a few.
One of my favorite ways to use essential oils is with my Lumo misting diffuser. When I am stressed, fighting a cold or just want to smell something lovely, I turn up my diffuser and settle in with a good book and a hot cup of tea. You will have a ton of fun thinking of new blends for a fresh scent or boost to your immune heath.
Essential oils are very easily absorbed into the skin, so use directly to the skin is common. However, use of a carrier oil, such as fractionated coconut oil or sweet almond oil, is advised on sensitive or dry skin and to dilute more potent oils.
Application to the bottom of your feet is especially effective since the soles of our feet do produce oil which acts as a barrier.
Remember that every body is different, so start off with the lightest dose, 1-2 drops, if you are not sure how you will react to direct skin contact. Typically you will want to reapply every 4-6 hours depending on desired use of your oils.
Northern Michigan Soap CO. Magnesium body butter is made with
doTERRA’s On Guard (thieves) blend and is great for use on sore muscles.
DoTERRA Breathe stick is a favorite of mine during allergy, cold and flu season.
When you use a cinnamon stick in your tea or oregano in pasta sauce you are actually consuming a less concentrated version of essential oils. When consuming essential oils internally, they enter the bloodstream and are carried throughout the body. Please, take care to follow the label recommendations or seek professional dosing guidelines and always start with small doses.
If you are trying to find a great way to incorporate more water into your daily routine, try DoTERRAs Slim and Sassy blend to jazz things up. Use your oils in cooking, smoothies and teas as well.
With the increased popularity of essential oils there is certainly no shortage of players in the game.
